Non pressure ulcers

Kinda of a stupid question..but I was wondering if the nurse can specify the severity of a non-pressure ulcer ex. L97-? I know they can with pressure ulcers, does this same rule still apply?

Thanks :)

Yes it does. The assessing clinician; the following is the coding tip from the Decision Health Coding Book:

"The severity of the ulcer may be determined and coded based upon nursing documentation, but confirmation of necrosis of bone should be de obtained by diagnostic testin such as MRI. (cannot determine through visualization alone)."

  • There are no stupid questions!

I learn way too much from everyone J

Yes, nurses can specify the severity of non pressure ulcers.

I was told in the class that we can code severity/stage ulcers (pressure
and nonpressure) and we can define a BMI rating – everything else needs to
    come from a physician
