  • Lisa, d/s states infected foot wound S/P amputation. Pt did not go home on antibx. But op report states gangrene and DM foot infection, left foot.
  • Would e11.52 cover the infection or how in the world do I code that ive been going in circles because the infection is unidentified.
  • Shes out this week haha! I think infection might be coded separate considering gangrene is cutting off blood supply and can cause infection but idk! I think I may use L08.9. thanks for your help!!!

    Hi,
    Per Mayo Clinic:
"Gangrene refers to the death of body tissue due to a lack of blood flow or a bacterial infection."
If no specific infection is stated I do not recommend coding a separate infection code since the gangrene encompasses it. Now if you knew the causative organism then I would code the appropriate A or B code to go along with it, but since you don't the DM w/ gangrene should suffice. Hope this helps.
