Mild cognitive impairment

Can you code mild cognitive impairment and dementia together?

Thanks!

  • Just FYI, this can be confusing for in the guidelines further down it states to use additional code to identify the type of dementia, but in the coding tips states not to use dementia. Maybe with the new changes coming this might be clarified.
  • The code G31.84 states:
    Use Additional Code (G31)
    code to identify:
    dementia with behavioral disturbance (F02.81)
    dementia without behavioral disturbance (F02.80)

    Contradicts the excludes 1 :( confusing :(

Always go with the "Excludes" - only code G31.84 if MD has stated. If MD also states Dementia, I would code that, but not both.
