Parkinsonism
I’m a little confused – when I look at G20 for Parkinsonism it is
specifically listed under the clarifying terms.
However in the coding tips it states that the physician must specifically
document/specify Parkinsons disease for G20 and it states “Do not assign
code G20 for a patient with a Parkinsonism disorder”
Please help as I do have a pt with the dx of “Parkinsonism” in one spot and
in another it is stated “Parkinsons type disorder”

There is a wonderful discussion on Parkinson’s vs Parkinsonism on the Nat’l Parkinson Foundation website www.parkinson.org
Easy to understand and should give insight into the differences.

In the index when you go to Parkinsonism it lists G20 and under the heading it lists all of the diagnoses that are included. Parkinsonism or Parkinson's disease NOS is listed under G20, so it is correct for you to code G20 if the MD does not state secondary to another condition. It would be better to query if it is due to a secondary condition, but if unable to receive clarification it would not be incorrect to code G20 for a diagnosis of Parkinsonism NOS.
