Drain care code

Can the drain care code Z48.03 be coded with z48.01 for dressing changes of the drains or is this integral to the Z48.03?

Thanks :)!!

I was at a Decision Health coding workshop that instructed not to use Z46.82 for drains. Drain care is integral to routine surgical aftercare. When surgery is not done, and there is only drain care - such as a biliary tube, code as attention to artificial opening.

  • I should've been more clear on what was going on with my patient I apologize.

Pt had Necrotizing Pancreatitis will gall stones, portal vein SMV, and splenic vein thrombosis.

S/P Gastrostomy, necrosectomy, peritoneal lavage and laparotomy. Also had percutaneous drain placement

This is where I came up with my drain code Z48.03.
  • It is a PleurX Drainage System.
    Not Pleurix.

It is confusing that the Index points to Z48.03 when referencing main term Aftercare, but according to the study material we went over at the coding workshop, this code is to be used only for changing or removing drains. Routine monitoring of a drain site and/or drain output is part of routine postop care, it is covered by the Z48.8x codes.

  • Not all AC GI systems involve a drain. So it is not an integral part of the AC code
