acute and chronic kidney disease

We have a patient who went to the hospital for confusion and was found to be in acute renal failure due to a bladder neck obstruction. There is no mention of any chronic renal failure in the H & P. The patient is receiving dialysis 3 times a week. MD thinks that if he has a TURP or a TUNA done that he may not have to self cath or be on dialysis anymore. My question is do I code this as acute or end stage renal failure in M1020.

  • When in doubt always query the physician. It would be his determination as to rather the pt. is still in "acute" failure or rather it is now ESRD. That is not a determination you can make without further guidance as both cases may cause dialysis use.
