PT only

My patient was in a car wreck months ago. Stayed in facility for 3 months. Everything has healed from wreck, patient is just weak and needs PT. What should I code as primary? We shouldn't code weakness as primary, right? Patient does have a colostomy from wreck but PT is not helping with that. He also has respiratory failure.

Check with the therapist who did the evaluation for your agency and ask what specifically is the primary condition they are addressing; are there any deficits or sequelae from fractures or other injuries? Code also any chronic or comorbid conditions (even if currently stable) that will impact the patient's ability to participate in the Plan of Care or to meet goals. Respiratory failure would definitely be included.

Was there an actual "muscle wasting" that occurred while patient was laid up for such a long time?
