Unilateral joint replacement for bilateral joint osteoarthritis
If you are admitting a patient for aftercare following right TKR and the preop diagnosis was bilateral knee primary osteoarthritis would you use the code for bilateral knee OA in M1011 and M1017 or only code right knee OA?
I feel that the diagnosis assigned by the physician is bilateral (M17.11) so even though only the right knee was treated I would think the original code needs to be used.
For M1021-M1023 I would use Z47.1, Z96.651 and if affecting POC include M17.12 for the remaining left knee OA.
Can anyone weigh in on this?
Thank you
