Failed L Rotator Cuff Surgery

patient went into surgery for a L shoulder rotator cuff tear, M75.102 impingement syndrome M75.42, acromioclavicular joint osteoarthritis M19.012. The surgical procedure failed due to friable tissue, irreparable L rotator cuff. How should I code this? Patient is receiving OT now for the rotator cuff tear.

what code should I use for the failed surgery?

A. L Rotator Cuff Tear M75.102
B. Acromioclavicular joint OA M19.012

Thanks,
Dorothy

  • Morning Dorothy.
Your patient is post-op "other ortho surgery" (a Z-code) and since it is a failed procedure, that means the pre-op conditions are still present so code those as still active.

  • I was looking for a T code because of failed surgery. Thanks for your help.

  • The "failure" is not on the part of the surgery, it is the patient's poor tissue status and I am not sure there is a T-code for that situation
