influenza A

Is J09.x2 the correct code to assign for influenza A?
The physician doesn't use the word, novel.

Also, is influenza an upper respiratory tract illness? So I wouldn't use J44.0 if patient also has exacerbation of COPD?

  • J44.1 is exacerbation of COPD. It states you code j44.0 IF the patient has a LOWER resp infection. :) if it was a LOWER resp infection with COPD and COPD Exacerbation you would assign both J44.1, J44.0, followed by the lower resp infection :)

That I understand, but is influenza a lower resp infection? I'm thinking upper, but want to make sure.

  • it states lower resp infections include pneumonia, bronchitis, and bronchiolitis...I guess by that i would assume to leave off the J44.0...since influenza is more viral.

Thanks, that's what I was thinking. Do you think the j09.x2 is correct?

  • Yes that is the default code unless you have any other manifestations/complications listed :)
  • Influenza is a viral infection not confined to the respiratory system, but instead is generalized illness throughout affecting multiple organ systems including the GI system

There is a combination code for pneumonia cause by influenza
  • edited April 2017
influenza codes often include other manifestations, such as resp. or gastro manifestations. clarifying terms include influenzal pharyngitis, influenzal laryngitis and influenza with upper resp symptoms unspecified. but if the patient also has associated pleural effusion or sinusitis, additional codes need to be assigned to capture those, according to tabular instructions.
  • My patient has both Influenza A and Pneumonia..can someone please tell me what code is the right one to assign? The whole Novel thing throws me off? I first came to J09.X2...then I seem J09.X1...then I saw J10.1 since the "NOVEL"...can someone please clarify what I do here? I read the chapter section and that's just as unclear!

    Thanks
