IV antibiotics

If you are admitting a patient for IV antibiotics administration, would you code it?
Of course we are coding what the antibiotics are for as primary, but I thought that IV antibiotics code would also be helpful. I have trouble finding a code for short term IV antibiotics administration. Is there one?

Thank you,
Maria

  • Z45.2, Z79.2
  • I thought Z79.2 was only long-term antibiotics not short-term. For example, prophy oral antibiotics for UTI.
  • It has a qualifier of (current) in the description. It better helps to flesh out what you are doing in there - makes clinical sense with the IV. If someone was just taking short term abx orally, I probably wouldn't bother.
Z79.2 Long term (current) use of antibiotics
  • We opened patient with a physician's written diagnosis of chronic infected pressure ulcer (osteo/diabetic) on an old BKA site but is not currently taking any antibiotics. Our coder is refusing to code infected PU because pt is not taking antibiotics. Coder wants to call this a diabetic ulcer. Your thoughts? Thanks for the feedback!

  • Clarify with the physician, I really dislike it when they put PU, diabetic because it's one or the other. Being on a stump, most likely a PU, but you need to get a clarification from the MD and get documentation as to why no antibiotics if infected. That's what I would do.

  • Long term of antibiotics used for abx tx >14 days (approx.). Otherwise code active infection, care of vascular access device (if one present). You could also code therapeutic drug level monitoring If you are drawing for vanco trough, etc.
Make sure you also capture IV infusion in the OASIS.
