diabetes and CKD

I’m second guessing myself. We have a pt with diabetes and with CKD#3. Can
we assume this relationship now making the code an #11.21? If I do this do
I also code the stage of the CKD?

Yes to assumed relationship – see the current alphabetic index – I would prob use E11.22

Thank you and have a good day!

  • You can assume the relationship, however, you would Code E11.22 and then code the CKD stage N18.-. Looking up Diabetes in the Alpha has the term “with” right under the diagnosis. Anything that falls under the “with”, you can assume causal relationship. Then when you go to the tabular under E11.22 Type 2 diabetes mellitus with diabetic chronic kidney disease – underneath it states “Use additional code to identify stage of CKD. Thanks and have a great week!
