But if Drain was put in after surgery like JP drain we don't have to code additional code for drain care.. It is included in aftercare of surgery isn't it?
The coding conference I attended instructed not to use Z46.82 for drain care. Could you please elaborate for us so we understand what criteria supports the use of Z46.82 vs Z48.03? Thank you,

Pam, That's what we use for a biliary drain which is what you have described. Use the nonvascular catheter code.

How would you code a drain that was placed for drainage of a for cholecystitis, no surgery was done. Nursing will not remove or change, they will just monitor. They of course are monitoring signs and symptoms of acute cholecystitis, etc. Would you use nonvascular catheter code? --- This list is a co-sponsored service of the Board of Medical Specialty Coding & Compliance (http://www.medicalspecialtycoding.com) and DecisionHealth (http://www.decisionhealth.com), publisher of Diagnosis Coding Pro for Home Health.
