Chronic Kidney Disease N18.-

I have a question reqarding what Decision health ICD10 is stating on CKD, stage 1-4, stage 5 and ESRD. It states to code first which by the guidelines to my understanding means that it is a manifestation code, is that correct? Can N18.- codes be coded as primary?

  • CKD can be coded as a primary for some patient's. Typically it's associated with HTN or diabetes, those codes would supercede CKD. But in those cases where the patient does not have CKD due to another disease, it would be coded primary, when it's the primary reason for treatment and/or admission. Excerpt below shows code first any associated disease.

    Chronic kidney disease (CKD)
    Code first any associated:
    diabetic chronic kidney disease (E08.22, E09.22, E10.22, E11.22, E13.22)
hypertensive chronic kidney disease (I12.-, I13.-) Use additional code to identify kidney transplant status, if applicable, (Z94.0)
