There are new, more specific codes for Cognitive Deficits following Cerebral Infarction.
If ALL that the MD gives is "Vascular Dementia d/t CVA", would you agree that this would be acceptable coding:

I69.318 Other s/s involving cognitive functions following cerebral infarction
F01.50 Vascular dmentia without behavioral disturbance

Can we code vascular dementia on its own or does it need to coded with a underlying physiological condition?

I don't have the cause of the vascular dementia and under F01 it states to "code first" and vascular dementia does not appear in brackets so it is not part of a pure manifestation/etiology pair.

I am coding hospice and the terminal is the vascular dementia but that is an invalid Terminal DX.
