Home Health visit Same Day Patient Has a Physician Appointment

Hello all!
Under Medicare can a skilled nursing home health visit be performed the same day the patient has a physician appointment? For example, a patient has a follow up appointment with a physician who will not be addressing a patients Wound Vac but the Wound Vac dressing needs to be changed on the same day as the physician appointment (needs to be changed every 48 hours). Can the nurse go out that same day and perform the wound Vac dressing change?

Thanks, Scott

  • Yes. We do all the time, although normally we see patient, they are having issues and get them in to see dr. the same day. Have never had an issue. You'll run into that a lot with dressing changes.

  • We have always tried to make a point to verify which MD the patient may be seeing on that day. If it is our ordering physician then we normally don't unless there is a dressing change that the MD doesn't do. We watch to be sure we are not duplicating services. We will then go in on say the next day to
follow up with the patient as to the outcome of the MD visit. Just our practice, although you can never be 100 % sure when a patient is going into the MD office. I have never run into an issue if we have been in on the same day that I am aware of.

  • Yes, RN can if the MD does not have the capability to perform the wound care.
