  • I just read this scenario in a Diagnosis Coding Pro from Oct 2016, I'm a little behind. :)
    I don't think anything has changed tho - it says "Once a complication, always a complication" If the cellulitis and infection resolve and the wound still requires ongoing care, continue to code it with T81.4xxD and drop the bug and cellulitis codes.

  • Once there is a complication like infection you code the complication until the wound is healed. while the complication is active the 7th character is A once it is resolved it becomes D. so if you have a post op infection while the patient is on antibiotics it would be T81.4XXA. Once the infection is resolved and we are doing wound care for the recovery phase of that complication the code is T81.4XXD.
