Removal of right knee prothesis due to infection

I would code T84.53XA (infection due to internal right knee prosthesis) as my inpatient dx.

For M1021 Would I code:

T84.53XA - Since infection is still present, although prothesis has been removed.

Or

Z47.33 - Since prothesis is not present anymore?

It would be T84.53XA since wound is still infected, correct?

  • I was just searching for guidance on the same thing and came across this answer from Beth Johnson. You could probably leave off the pyogenic arthritis in your case. And i wouldn't use Z47.33 since it excludes absence of knee joint. Z89.52- is better. (thanks Beth!)

"Code as infection due to internal joint prosthesis: T84.53XA or T84.54XA depending on laterality, with 7th character assuming patient is still on antibiotics, then pyogenic arthritis M00.- (note there are different codes depending on whether it's staph, pneumococcal, strep, or other bacteria AND the site plus laterality); add a B96-code if the organism is known and it's not one of these 3 specified. If the joint was removed and/or an antibiotic spacer was placed be sure to add acquired absence of joint (Z89.52-), also specifying laterality.

    Got it? :)
